Heritage consultancy that increases the understanding, conservation and enjoyment of heritage assets.

Research-based heritage consultancy services to help conservation professionals and private owners to create sustainable futures for historic buildings, places and collections. Our advice increases the understanding, conservation and enjoyment of heritage assets.

The practice was founded and is led by Alex Ashworth, an architectural historian, designer and researcher, whose passionate interest in historic buildings and fine and applied art took root as a boy and was later formalised by extensive training.

Polymaths may be unfashionable, but the ability to understand a house, its history, landscape and collections in the round, together with a design eye, can bring deeper insights and identify fresh opportunities. Whether researching and recording an historic house, rethinking a room or picture hanging, or writing and designing a publication about it, Alex combines a rare multidisciplinary expertise with creative flair, helping to extend the life and increase the enjoyment of historic buildings, places and collections.

  • "A very big thank you for what you have done – some extraordinary discoveries in your report. The house is now fully alive with an understanding of its past, and I love the evidence that the name see-sawed between Court and House which has clearly caused so much confusion with the neighbouring historic house until now. Again, thank you for the outstanding archival research and house history."

John Dorrington Ward / Ward & Co

  • "The information you have unearthed on the picture is frankly marvellous. I am impressed you have discovered so much, especially when other researchers had found next to nothing. The owners of the picture will be thrilled!"

Sam Parker Bowles / Art Consultant

  • "Your historic building report and heritage statement provided all of the information required by the planners and went much further by significantly expanding our knowledge and understanding of the house and its historic phases of development."
